Councilor Beatriz Mato highlights the importance of the Gandario treatment plant in guaranteeing the water quality of the Ría de Betanzos
Xunta de Galicia Acting Councilor for the Environment and Zoning, Beatriz Mato, in the company of Bergondo Mayor Alejandra Pérez Márquez, visited the new Gandario Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) on November 4. This facility, which serves an estimated population of 6,000 people in the urban areas of Gandarío, Moruxo, Bergondiño, Cangas, O Casal and Vilanova, has been in the testing phase since this July.
The works, awarded to the Tedagua - Constructora San José joint venture, have an estimated budget of over 4 million euros, and include the design and construction of the WWTP, the installation of a combined sewer mains network of over 4.3 kilometers and three pumping stations with their corresponding pipelines.
These infrastructures will significantly enhance the water quality of the Ría de Betanzos inlet - one of the twelve that make up the Rías Altas of Galicia. The inlet has some of the top beaches in Galicia, with the one at Gandario being one of the best. This condition has led to its categorization as a protected natural area in the European Union's Natura 2000 network, within the Betanzos-Río Mandeo group. As a result, Ría de Betanzos is considered to be a Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (Site of Importance to the Community) due to its rich intertidal fauna.
