Federico Ramos and Alberto Núñez Feijoo inaugurate the extension and upgrading of Monforte de Lemos’ drinking water treatment system

Today the Secretary of State for the Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment (MAGRAMA), Federico Ramos, and the President of the Regional Government of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, inaugurated the extension and upgrading of the Monforte de Lemos drinking water treatment system (Lugo). Other authorities in attending the ceremony were the Spanish Government’s representative in Galicia, Samuel J. Juárez; the mayor of Monforte de Lemos, Severino Rodríguez; the Minister for the Environment, Territory and Infrastructures of the Government of Galicia, Agustín Hernández; MAGRAMA’s Director-General for Water, Liana Ardiles; the Spanish Government’s representative in the province of Lugo, Ramón Carballo; the Director-General of MAGRAMA’s state corporation Acuaes, Aránzazu Vallejo; the Director of the public utility Augas de Galicia, Francisco Menéndez; and the President of the Miño-Sil Catchment Board, Francisco Marín Muñoz.

The work required an investment of € 7.4 m, 50% of which was financed by MAGRAMA through the state corporation Acuaes and the EU’s ERDF programme, 40% by the Government of Galicia through Augas de Galicia and 10% by the Monforte de Lemos town council.

This project provides Monforte de Lemos with a quality drinking water treatment system capable of meeting the demands of a population of approximately 20,000 inhabitants, the industries in the area and the dry port while complying with the demands of EU regulations.

The water supply system inaugurated today consists of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Ribasaltas with a maximum flow rate of 230 l/s; a new headrace (water intake) and relief channel; a new product water balancing reservoir in Ribasaltas and a pumping station and pipeline from Ribasaltas to Cornado. The water catchment of the Freixo weir has also been enhanced.

Finally, an access road was built to provide access to the new WWTP and a series of measures were taken to enhance operation of the system in the vicinity of San Vicente and Piñeira.

The project inaugurated today is one of those which MAGRAMA is undertaking in Galicia, through the state corporation Acuaes, the total investment of which amounts to € 580.9 m.

The following is a documentary on the treatment system and the work performed at the WWTP, first published in the Jan-Feb 2014 issue of the FuturEnviro magazine:
