Tedagua supplies the two portable desalination plants that will bolster water production for crop irrigation in La Palma

On September 19, the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption took place in the Canary Island of La Palma. This natural disaster is causing serious problems for the local population, who were displaced from their homes and cities due to the lava flow. Basic infrastructure such as water supply and the main communication lines have also been affected.

Aid to the citizens of La Palma has been increasingly flowing in as the eruption developed. Tedagua wanted to offer immediate assistance by commissioning two portable desalination plants to bolster water reserves in areas affected by the volcano.

On October 5, the plants were transported to the Island of La Palma from Puerto de la Luz (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), and arrived at their setup site in Puerto Naos on October 6. During the following days, the installation and commissioning of the plants will be performed so as to begin the production of desalinated water suitable for irrigation as soon as possible.

Both plants have a combined production capacity of 5,600 m3/day, using reverse osmosis technology for the seawater desalination process. Their construction as a container makes them easy to transport and install, in addition to having a limited impact on the environment.

The provision of these desalination plants will guarantee the irrigation water supply for the affected areas of the island, especially benefiting the great plantain industry, which exported 144,300 tons of this fruit in 2020, thereby relieving the water supply issues that the Cumbre Vieja volcano is causing.
