TAIF wastewater treatment project, led by Tedagua, wins Sustainability & Innovation Award at SHARAKAT 2026

TAIF wastewater treatment project, led by Tedagua, wins Sustainability & Innovation Award at SHARAKAT 2026
  • The project has been recognised for its technological innovation, energy efficiency and sustainable use of water and resources recovered during treatment
  • TAIF was the first wastewater treatment facility developed under a public-private partnership to enter operation in Saudi Arabia and is designed to serve a population equivalent of 750,000

The TAIF Independent Sewage Treatment Plant (ISTP), led by Tedagua in partnership with Tawzea, has won the Sustainability & Innovation Award at the SHARAKAT Awards 2026, held on 19 October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The award recognises the sustainable approach and innovative solutions embedded in the project.

TAIF marks a milestone for the Kingdom’s water sector as the first wastewater treatment facility developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) to enter operation in Saudi Arabia. The project is delivered under a 25-year build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) contract covering financing, design, construction, ownership, operation and maintenance, before its transfer to SHARAKAT (formerly Saudi Water Partnership Company).

The plant has an initial treatment capacity of 100,000 m³/day, expandable to 270,000 m³/day, and is designed to serve a population equivalent of 750,000. It combines advanced biological treatment with tertiary filtration and disinfection, anaerobic digestion, solar sludge drying and energy recovery from biogas.

The plant’s combined heat and power system generates more than 30% of the electricity it consumes, while solar sludge drying achieves a dry solids content of over 90%. The project also uses reclaimed water to irrigate 21 hectares of green space as part of the Saudi Green Initiative.

The award reinforces TAIF’s standing as a benchmark for public-private collaboration, innovation and sustainable water management. It also highlights Tedagua’s role as a strategic partner in delivering infrastructure across the entire water cycle, drawing on its expertise in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of solutions tailored to each project. The company remains committed to innovation, energy efficiency and sustainable development to help secure access to high-quality water for future generations.
