Tedagua, through its parent company, Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios, and jointly with its partners Orascom Construction and Metito Overseas, has been awarded the 200 million euro contract for the construction of a seawater desalination plant in Sfax - the second-largest city in the country, located 270 km south of Tunis, on the east coast.
The contract, financed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and entered into between Société Nationale d'Explitation et de la Distribution des Eaux (SONEDE) and the consortium, was signed in the presence of the acting Minister of Agriculture, Water Services and Fishing, Mr. Mohamed Fadhel Kraiem, the Ambassador to Japan in Tunisia, His Excellence Mr. Shimizu Shinsuke, the President of the SONEDE, Mr. Mosbah Helali and the representative from JICA in Tunisia, Mr. Shinohara Shunei.
The total duration of the works will be 54 months, which include two years of operation and maintenance, at which point the project will be handed over to SONEDE.
The plant will use reverse osmosis technology and have an initial capacity of 100,000 m3/day, though the civil works will be performed to accommodate a future expansion to 200,000 m3/d. The marine infrastructure will be composed of two intake towers, a 4,200 meter intake pipe and a 3,200 meter brine outfall.
Located in Gargour, 20 km away from the city of Sfax, it will be an essential piece of infrastructure for the socioeconomic development of the region by guaranteeing access to drinking water to over 600,000 people.
This new contract is one of many Tedagua has entered into in Tunisia, which include the wastewater treatment plants of the cities of Bizerte and Nabeul.
