Tedagua leads the construction of a desalination plant in Djibouti

The consortium led by Tedagua, which also sees the participation of the Eiffage Génie Civil French construction company, has been selected to carry out the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract for a seawater desalination plant located in Doraleh, which will improve the drinking water supply of Djibouti City, capital of its namesake republic located in the Horn of Africa. The awarded budget was 46 million euros, 5.5 of which will be provided by the state of Djibouti and 40.5 by the European Union (EU) as part of the "Sustainable Energy for All" initiative.

The goal of the project is to build a reverse osmosis desalination plant with an initial capacity of 22,500 m3/day, with a civil works infrastructure designed to accommodate a future expansion up to 45,000 m3/day. It also includes the construction of a 5,000 m3 regulating reservoir and an 8.5 km pipeline with a diameter of 700 mm, which will connect the plant with the city's drinking water distribution network. The works are set to start this year and continue for 3 years. The contract also includes the exploitation, operation and maintenance of the constructed facilities for a period of five years.

The new facility will supply drinking water to approximately 200,000 people in areas where there are still significant deficiencies between water supply and demand. The energy required for the operation of the desalination plant will be fully supplied by a wind farm that will be built in the vicinity, which will improve energy costs and, therefore, the cost of the water at each home.

The contract, which is related to project PEPER (Producing Safe Drinking Water with Renewable Energy) of the European Commission (EC), was signed in the presence of the Minister of the Economy and Finance, Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh, the Minister of Industry, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Mohamed Ahmed Awaleh, the European Union Director General for International Cooperation and Development, Stefano Manservisi and the European Union Ambassador to Djibouti, Adam Kulach.
